SOLO
for trombone and orchestra (1999)

SOLO, for trombone and orchestra, written for Christian Lindberg, is not a concerto in the accepted sense of the word, even though the solo part is of considerable, almost excessive, difficulty. The orchestral material is partly derived from that of the trombone but they go different ways and the substance of their discourse is basically different. Every now and again, the trombone and the orchestra share the same tonic but they never actually "talk" to each other. That is why SOLO is not so much a concerto as an encounter between two solitudes.
