I know creative minds that are like mountain brooks: quick, brilliant, babbling - and shallow. There are others - powerful, steady, unchanging and unidirectional, like Siberian rivers. Some are like stagnant, overgrown ponds, others are just puddles, appearing after a good rain and disappearing after a healthy dose of sunshine.
Berio's was an ocean - deep, all-encompassing, always in motion - a mysterious creative entity like the one in Tarkovsky's Solaris. It generated new worlds and sound universes, evoking long lost memories and associations. I am incredibly fortunate to have experienced the full impact of this artistic force during the marvelous months of work on Cronaca del Luogo and can say that it forever changed me as a musician. I suddenly understood very clearly that any true Music, music like his, evades all explanations or words, that it can be defined only by the Music itself, and it is always more than the sum of all its components, no matter how important and intellectually fascinating. For this great lesson and for years of most generous friendship, I thank you, Maestro!
