I have good memories of Luciano Berio, but very few.
After the Auditorium in Roma was inaugurated and Luciano was the President of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, he invited us in quartet with Stefano Scodannibbio (who unfortunately left us much too early!), Tara Bouman (clarinet/bass clarinet) and Fabrizio Ottaviucci (piano) in the sala 800 (now «Sinopoli»). This was a very nice concert, our quartet was called «Sopra Le Nuvole». We played our own music, partly composed (Stefano), most of it intuitive playing. With this group later we recorded the CD Spaces and Spheres, which has just come out on Wergo Records, Germany. Unfortunately Luciano was unable to attend our concert. In the intermission Stefano handed me over a mobile phone, and I had the chance to speak very briefly with Luciano, he was very kind to us.
Well, and years before he conducted the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, and I was soloist with the Haydn trumpet Concerto. With his permission I improvised the cadenza, using 1/4 notes. He hugged me afterwards and really liked it. He laughed.
